Increased security for public figures

Lone Worker Security levels for politicians and their families in Scotland are expected to increase as threats of violence from extremists are on the rise, an expert has warned.

Mobile devices and apps designed to support the safety of lone workers including politicians can increasingly play a key part in protecting public figures.

Safe Shores Monitoring, which provides lone worker security to employers, expects the benefits of a location-based system that alerts emergency services at the push of a button will be an appealing option for police and security professionals who are reviewing security arrangements.

Recently Humza Yousaf, Scottish Minister for Transport and the Islands, revealed he has started carrying a personal alarm in the wake of receiving racist death threats aimed at himself and his family.

Tom Morton, CEO of Safe Shores Monitoring, said: “It is unfortunate that public figures are under increasing threat from extremist groups and it must be frightening for Mr Sarwar and others who must face going out in public each day. In the wake of the tragic example of MP Jo Cox, the onus is on both the security services and employers – including governments – to ensure people remain safe from harm.

“Employers have a duty of care which requires them to do what they can to ensure the safety of their employees or their families.

“This applies to people in public life who face what appears to be a rising threat level.

“All employers, including Scottish Parliament should consider the wider risks to employees, especially those with high profiles and contact with members of the public.

“Mobile technology can be used effectively to assist in mitigating risks and supporting police with response and investigations. Everyone has a right to feel safe.”
