We support tens of thousands of individuals at risk.

Lone Workers and at Risk Employees

A lone worker is an individual who works by themselves without close or direct supervision. Lone workers exist in a range of business sectors and can include individuals who work at home, working separately from others or people who work outside of normal working hours.

There is an estimated 6.8 million people lone working in the UK, with more people working alone as each year goes by. Therefore, employers should prioritise assessing and mitigating risks that lone workers face.

Industries We Support

We support tens of thousands of lone workers across a range of industry sectors annually. Here are just a few:

Facilities Management

Facilities Management employers up to 10% of the entire workforce of the UK, meaning hundreds of thousands of lone workers are employed within the sector. Facilities management entails a range of jobs – from window cleaners, to site managers, maintenance workers and more, exposing individuals to a range of risks that could impact their safety and wellbeing.

Within Facilities Management, lone workers can face a multitude of risks such as slips, trips and falls, injury from rushing work, harm from electrical shocks, overloading of equipment and much more.

To help this sector, we have a range of approved products and services that support lone workers within facilities management. Our services contain core features including an SOS button, Welfare Check, Timed Activity Guard, Clock and even a man-down sensor to alert when a lone worker has been injured.

Health and Social Care

Over 3 million individuals work within the Health and Social Care sector in the UK. Not only does this include staff from the National Health Service (NHS), but the sector also employs carers in the community, therapists, mental health support workers, receptionists, transport services, site managers and technicians who all will work alone at some point in their working career. Therefore, it’s important to recognise the foreseeable risk in this sector and act accordingly to protect your staff.

As a primarily front-facing role, many lone workers in the Health and Social Care sector may experience violence and harassment as part of their role. Other foreseeable risks include injury from moving and handling, slips, trips and falls, violence, aggression and challenging behaviour.

At Safe Shores, we have a range of approved apps and devices which support your duty of care in supporting staff in the Health and Social Care Sector.

The Third Sector

The Third Sector, which contains over 163,000 charities, social enterprises and community groups, employs just over 2.7% of the UK workforce with over 800,000 employees in the sector. Additional to this, the sector supports over 1 million volunteers, highlighting the vast number of individuals in the sector who may be exposed a range of workplace and societal risks.

The Third Sector hosts a range of workers and volunteers, from shopworkers to fundraisers and support workers, each individual is exposed to risks when working alone to raise awareness and funds for their cause.

At Safe Shores, we understand that the Third Sector is flexible with new starts and volunteers. To help, our flexible personal safety management system allows you to delegate personal safety devices to new employees and volunteers to ensure their safety at any time, with the ability to disable devices and SIM cards when not in use.

The Public Sector

The Public Sector is one of the UK’s largest employers, accounting for over 16.5% of jobs, employing over 5.42 people. The sector employs a diverse range of workers from council staff, social workers and environmental protection officers to housing benefit officers, street cleaners and MP’s.

No matter how senior your role is within the public sector, all staff deserve to feel safe and secure whilst they perform their vital duties.

At Safe Shores Monitoring, we have a range of approved apps and devices which support lone workers across a range of roles within the public sector. Our Archangel® Personal Safety Management Platform allows you to manage your own lone worker alarms or our 24-hour Alarm Receiving Centre can do it for you.

Utilities

The Utilities Sector is one which contains a vast number of individuals who work alone.

Within the Utilities Sector, you may find gas engineers, electrical engineers, structural engineers, quantity surveyors, plant operators, street workers, asset inspectors and more who all perform high risk activities on a day to day basis.

In this sector, lone workers are exposed to heightened risk by being exposed to toxic and/or dangerous working environments where injury may occur. Therefore, it’s important to mitigate risk and put measures in place to support these workers.

At Safe Shores, we can help you perform your Duty of Care for your staff within the utilities sector. We have a range of approved apps and devices which support lone workers when at heightened risk.

Construction

Working in Construction poses a heightened risk in comparison to other roles. The worker fatal injury rate in 2016-2017 was 1.37 per 100,000 workers – over three times the average across all industries.

With this in mind, it’s important to put measures in place which can support the health and safety of employees within the Construction Sector.

Our range of approved apps and devices can do just that. With a range of risk management features including an SOS button, Welfare Check System, Clock and TAG function and man down sensor, our products can help prevent foreseeable risks in the construction sector.

Transport and Logistics

Within the UK, the logistics sector employs 1.7 million people across 194,000 companies. Including those who work in logistics occupations in other sectors, the actual size of the sector is an estimated 2.3 million people, equating to 8% of the UK’s entire workforce.

With these statistics in mind, we believe a vast majority of these individuals will be lone working at a regular pace as part of their working week. Whether on the road, at the loading dock or in a warehouse, thousands of employees in the sector will be working solo, exposed to a range of risks including vehicular incidents, falling objects, fatigue and sudden illness.

As well as our range of personal safety devices, our Archangel® Personal Safety Management System contains Tracer, an Advanced Location Tool which can support lone workers in this sector. Working in conjunction with personal safety devices, Tracer can track where employees are and can check on their wellbeing.

Forestry and Agriculture

The Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing Sector in the United Kingdom is one which exposes increased risk to lone workers, as remote areas bring poor signal connection and response for those who need emergency assistance.

Often working alone, tree surgeons, fishermen, farmers and other lone workers are exposed to a range of risks when working in remote areas including unexpected injuries, illnesses and slips, trips and falls.

To ensure that we can support lone workers no matter where they are in the world, we have recently introduced our Voyager Satellite Communications device which exists to support you no matter where you are in the UK.

Education

Within Education, many people may assume that teachers, assistants and researchers aren’t considered as lone workers. However, as they are working without direct supervision and may work alone in a room with a minimum amount of people, they still face a range of risks to their health and safety.

At Safe Shores Monitoring, we support all lone workers across the UK’s Education Sector with our unique blend of personal safety products and services.

The Gig Economy

The Gig Economy, defined as a labour market characterised by the prevalence of short-term contracts or freelance work as opposed to permanent jobs, is one of the largest labour markets in the UK with a high percentage of individuals lone working.

With a range of jobs in the sector, from delivery drivers, handymen, freelancers, videographers and even ethical hackers, the sector exposes thousands of individuals to a range of risks including unexpected injuries, violence and harassment and more.

At Safe Shores Monitoring, we can support large organisations with thousands of lone workers, but we can also support individuals who work as part of the Gig Economy. Our self-managed or ARC managed service means that lone workers across the Gig Economy can feel safe and secure knowing that our 24-hour Alarm Receiving Centre staff are there to support them in their time of need.
